Overview

Through my painting I establish a dialogue around the process of enculturation, social expectations and impositions, authority and family ties, within the framework of the survival of memory and its influence on the construction of identity.

My images form a sort of family album that takes us back to a distant past, often that of childhood. I work on the basis of images and documents found in family archives on which I intervene by reproducing the ways in which memory acts: erasing, isolating, repeating, interpreting, distorting... like an annotation that alters the original material, giving it a new meaning. The resulting images, carefully crafted technically and with a strong dramatic charge, offer us a profound reading of the fragility and strength of the individual, of the malaise and the capacity for resilience that characterises our changing times.

Biography

Javier Erre (Zamora, 1981) is a visual artist whose work delves into the construction of identity through a dialogue on memory, family ties, and social expectations and impositions. His art, influenced by photography and digital media, reinterprets images and documents from family archives, creating new narratives that connect the past with the present.

In his paintings, Javier approaches memory as both a constructive and destructive process, mimicking its mechanisms: erasing, isolating, repeating, and distorting. These interventions give new meanings to the original materials, resulting in works of high technical quality and strong dramatic impact. His pieces function as a “family album,” transporting viewers to a recent past, often linked to childhood, to reflect on fragility, resilience, and individual unease in a time of constant change.

He has presented notable solo exhibitions, including La vida en rosa at Galería Isolina Arbulu (Marbella) and La memoria como campo de batalla at FHA (Barcelona). His career includes participation in international art fairs such as Estampa (Madrid), Swab (Barcelona), and Affordable Art Fair (Hamburg). His work has earned prestigious awards, including First Prize at the XLVIII Ciudad de Martos Painting Contest (Jaén) and the LXXV Centelles Painting Prize (Barcelona).

Javier’s works are part of significant public and private collections, including Centre d’Art el Marçó Vell, Fundació Xavier Nogués (Barcelona), and the Ayuntamiento de Martos (Jaén). Through his art, Javier Erre invites viewers to reflect on the complex interplay between the past and the present, offering an introspective exploration of identity and collective memory.
