Overview

Beyond the myth presents the recent work of Madrid-based artist Javier de Juan, on view this summer in the Black Room of our gallery in Marbella.

In this body of work, Javier de Juan explores the enduring power of mythological archetypes, reimagining figures such as Medusa, Minerva, and Fausto through his distinctive artistic language. With masterful linework and vibrant, energetic brushstrokes, de Juan bridges the world of ancient myth and contemporary existence, revealing how these timeless narratives continue to shape human desires, fears, and identities.

Rather than confining these myths to the past, de Juan situates them within the visual and emotional landscape of the present. Madrid itself becomes the silent spectator in his compositions—a city whose urban fabric frames these mythological figures and allows them to emerge as protagonists in modern life. These characters, simultaneously universal and personal, invite viewers to recognize fragments of themselves, questioning how identity remains in constant flux. Each glance at de Juan’s work shifts perception, suggesting that who we are is always evolving, never fixed.

Some of these works were shown last year at the Centro Cultural Conde Duque in Madrid as part of the exhibition Cada vez que miras.

This presentation invites us to look beyond the surface—to see how mythology, memory, and contemporary realities intertwine, creating a space where past and present merge and where new ways of understanding ourselves can emerge.
