In The Descent of 31/A, Jaime Velázquez reimagines the fall of Comet 31/A through the symbolic framework of a traditional “Descent from the Cross,” transforming an astronomical event into an intimate contemporary metaphor. The comet’s fragmentation becomes a reflection of the emotional and social ruptures that shape everyday life.
The scene incorporates classical elements, including a floor with Arab-influenced motifs, grounding the composition in the Mediterranean cultural heritage that informs Velázquez’s visual language.
