“Someone once wrote: ‘You can take a man out of Africa, but you cannot take Africa out of a man.’ That is exactly what happened to me.”
Thomas Dressler (Germany, 1956) is a professional photographer based in Spain since 1984, whose work moves between landscape, wildlife, and contemporary aerial photography. Following his first journey to Africa in 1985, the continent became the emotional and visual core of his artistic practice. Two years later, he left his career in tourism to fully dedicate himself to photography, embarking on a lifelong exploration of some of the most remote and captivating regions of Southern Africa, particularly Namibia, Botswana, and the Kalahari Desert.
His work captures the vastness of the landscape, the dialogue between light and territory, and the silent presence of nature through images marked by strong atmosphere and refined composition. Over the years, Dressler has expanded his photographic gaze toward new territories including Andalusia, Southern Morocco, Cuba, and the American Southwest, while maintaining the same visual intensity that defines his practice. Andalusia, in particular, has become a central subject within his archive, drawn by the richness of its colours, landscapes, cities, and people.
The arrival of drone photography marked a major transformation in his artistic language. Aerial perspectives opened an entirely new visual territory, allowing him to create increasingly abstract and painterly compositions that reveal hidden patterns, textures, and structures invisible from the ground. This evolution has led to a more experimental and contemporary body of work, internationally recognised through numerous awards in nature and aerial photography.
His photographs have been published in internationally renowned publications including National Geographic, BBC Wildlife Magazine, Condé Nast Traveller, and GEO, among others. He has also published several books and calendars dedicated to Namibia, Andalusia, and Morocco.
In recent years, his aerial and drone photography has received multiple international distinctions, including awards at the Drone Photo Awards, ND Awards, and the Trierenberg Super Circuit.
