Urban codes: Santiago Corral
We are pleased to present URBAN CODES, the first exhibition by Mexican artist Santiago Corral at out gallery in Marbella.
The exhibition brings together a new series of oil paintings that place the viewer before a world that feels strangely familiar. Domestic interiors, buildings and urban landscapes are transformed by snow, water, vegetation and the passage of time. Everything is instantly recognisable, yet deeply unsettling. Reality remains intact, but its rules seem to have quietly shifted.
Human figures never appear in these scenes, yet their presence is unmistakable. A fire still burning, a sofa recently vacated, a piano waiting to be played, a bus illuminated in the middle of the night, or a room where every object remains perfectly in place all speak of those who were once there. Each painting bears the traces of a story the artist never fully tells. We sense that something has happened, yet the image remains silent, inviting the viewer to complete the narrative through imagination.
Rather than depicting destruction, Corral creates spaces where nature and architecture coexist with remarkable ease. Vegetation reclaims domestic interiors, snow settles inside elegant living rooms, water transforms the city into an underwater landscape, and the boundaries between inside and outside gradually dissolve. The extraordinary never arrives as a dramatic event; instead, it presents itself as a new reality that has been accepted with quiet inevitability.
The extraordinary technical precision of Corral's painting is what makes this experience possible. Every reflection, texture and shift of light is rendered with exceptional virtuosity, giving these imagined worlds an extraordinary sense of authenticity. The paintings persuade before reason has time to question what it is seeing. Only then does the uncertainty emerge: are we looking at a memory, a premonition, or a possible future?
In Santiago Corral's work, realism is not about reproducing reality but expanding it. His paintings invite us to inhabit an uncertain space where memory, imagination and time coexist without the need for explanation. They remain with us precisely because they never fully reveal the mystery they contain.
Born in Seville by chance, Santiago Corral is a Mexican artist who lives and works in San Miguel de Allende, while maintaining close ties with Europe through exhibitions and collaborations. With Urban Codes, Galería Isolina Arbulu presents his work in Marbella for the first time.
